God Bless Our Veterans!

Residents and staff gathered today to honor and remember those who have served in the U.S. Military at a special Veterans Day Ceremony. Each veteran present at the ceremony was recognized with a flag pin, presented by members of the Roswell High School JROTC. Flags were raised by the Roswell High School Color Guard and Rev. Larry Robert of Vitas Hospice led the service. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a slice of cake and enjoyed sharing stories and visiting with one another.

Gardens of Honor

During World Wars I and II, people in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Germany planted Victory Gardens (also called war gardens or food gardens for defense) as a way to reduce the demand on the public food supply and support the war effort. Learn more about this civilian effort on the home front in The History of Victory Gardens.

Consider planting your own Victory Garden this Memorial Day weekend, in honor of those who served and those who are currently serving our country!

Honoring Our Veterans

St. George Village members and staff gathered for a special Veterans Day ceremony on November 11. Rev. Larry Robert of Vitas Hospice led the service, and SGV’s Villagers choral group sang all of the songs representing each branch of the U.S. Military.

Flags were raised by the Roswell High School Color Guard, and Adam Christian honored the custom of playing “Taps” on the trumpet to end the service.

Afterward, each veteran present at the ceremony was recognized with a flag pin and everyone enjoyed a piece of the sheet cake decorated as a U.S. flag.

Honoring and Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

Pictured here are some of our resident veterans who, along with other St. George Village residents and staff, turned out for our annual Memorial Day flag-planting service.

Today, Memorial Day, we remember our nation’s fallen heroes, the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and preserve our freedom.

Every spring, St. George Village holds a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association — residents, their families and SGV staff members can “Sponsor a Flag” for $5.00, in honor or memory of a loved one. Each sponsored flag is planted on our front campus during Memorial Day weekend, and a list of those who sponsored flags and the people they honor is on display.

Court Reporters Help Record Veterans’ Stories

More than 2,800 interviews in the Veterans History Project collection have been transcribed by court reporters to date.

Once again, court reporters are making sure that the stories of America’s veterans are recorded for future generations.

2013 marks the tenth consecutive year that the Veterans History Project (VHP) has worked with the National Court Reporters Foundation (NCRF) and the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA).

The mission of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress American Folklife Center is to collect, preserve and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.
