Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

St. George Village residents turned out to cheer on the Gwinnett Braves in their game against the Norfolk Tides on July 11, 2013. The outing was one of SGV’s Thursday trips — organized day travels to fun and interesting sites and events around the north Georgia area. (By the way, the G-Braves bested the Tides in a 10-4 rout!)

Celebrate Summer!

In honor of the onset of summertime, we at St. George Village share this poem and wish you all the fun and joy of the warmest season of the year.

Summer Sun
by Robert Louis Stevenson

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven with repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

Older and Younger Generations Partner on Project to Help Others

Mary Apps (right) shows a first grade student how to tie the edges of a Linus blanket, which will be given to a child in need.

One of the volunteer activities St. George Village resident Mary Apps loves most is making blankets for the Linus Project, a national nonprofit organization that provides homemade blankets to children in need. (The concept is based on the Peanuts cartoon character, Linus, and his trusty security blanket.)

Honoring and Remembering Our Fallen Heroes

Pictured here are some of our resident veterans who, along with other St. George Village residents and staff, turned out for our annual Memorial Day flag-planting service.

Today, Memorial Day, we remember our nation’s fallen heroes, the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and preserve our freedom.

Every spring, St. George Village holds a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association — residents, their families and SGV staff members can “Sponsor a Flag” for $5.00, in honor or memory of a loved one. Each sponsored flag is planted on our front campus during Memorial Day weekend, and a list of those who sponsored flags and the people they honor is on display.

Meet the SGV Staff: Dave Fagerstrom

One of the first things you notice about Dave Fagerstrom is his welcoming smile. Dave, who has been a driver for St. George Village since August 2011, says that being behind the wheel gives him a reason to smile.

“I love driving!” he says. “And I enjoy spending time with our residents. It’s great to feel I’m being helpful to them by getting them where they want to go.”

Originally from Jamestown, N.Y., Dave served in Vietnam as an Air Force helicopter pilot. After serving his country, he began a career in banking as a branch manager and eventually moved to Atlanta in 1979. He discovered his true love of driving in retirement, when he did a stint as a tractor-trailer driver.

An Active Lifestyle Improves Physical and Mental Health

Former Miss America contestant and dancer Mary Ann Hearn enjoys the many fitness classes, such as stretching, strength training, Tai Chi and yoga.

An active lifestyle contributes to a healthy body and mind — staying active enhances the immune system and helps prevent illness, improves memory, reduces stress and increases your sense of well-being. St. George Village resident Mary Ann Hearn is the embodiment of an active lifestyle.

When Mary Ann moved to SGV, she was pleasantly surprised to find the extensive list activities offered by the community.

A Children’s Book Does Double the Good Works

SGV residents Mary Apps and Gene Stelten read A House for Wally and Me to a group of elementary school students.

St. George Village resident Gene Stelten says his granddaughter, Allie, was the inspiration for A House for Wally and Me, a children’s book that he wrote about the process of building a Habitat for Humanity home. The story is told through the eyes of seven-year-old Allie, who is helping to build a Habitat house in which she and her family will live.

“My granddaughter has always loved helping people in need, so I named the main character in the book after her,” Gene says.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities, how secure are they?

"Continuing Care Retirement Community"

The security of a continuing care retirement community is actually a very broad topic. Some will focus on the financial security of the community while others will be inclined to think of their physical safety within their new living environment. When clients ask this important question I always respond with a clarifying question to determine just what they really mean by secure. This ensures that I’ll answer their specific question and also provides an opportunity to address the three ways living at St. George Village is a secure choice!

1. Financial

How do you know when it’s time to move to a retirement community?

Atlanta Retirement Community I’m never really asked this question by clients yet it’s always implied when they say something like…St. George Village is really very nice, but I’m not ready to move just yet. When you’re independent and able to live without assistance it’s really hard to know when to make the move to a retirement community. You must admit that the thought of a retirement community leads one to think about aging people and a life that revolves around doctor’s appointments, wheel of fortune, eating diner at 5:00 and heading to bed around 7:00.
