Most individuals with the disease are age 65 or older. The likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s doubles about every five years after age 65 and after age 85, the risk reaches nearly 50 percent. According to an article in Parade magazine, there are at least three ways to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

1.Exercise Your Mind and Body

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Use it or lose it!” St. George Village boasts many opportunities to exercise including Tai Chi, Chair aerobics, line dancing, gardening, balloon volleyball, fishing, water aerobics, and weight training. Exercising one’s mind, however, sometimes takes more creativity. Board games, card games, word puzzles, sudoku, and “brainteasers” are great ideas! In fact, check out this website for fun options: http://www.parade.com/games/lumosity/index.html

2.Eat Foods Rich in Folate

These include fruits and leafy-green vegetables. Peanuts, okra, green peas, collard greens, spinach and black-eyed peas are all folate-rich foods which are “big hits” in the South.

3. Stay Socially Connected

Call, write, or email your family and friends often. Participate in day trips, group activities, and religious events. Share meals with others. Seek out others with common interests and help each other stay involved! If you need ideas of how to maintain an active lifestyle, just check out the activity calendars from any of our St. George Village neighborhoods!

The security of a continuing care retirement community is actually a very broad topic. Some will focus on the financial security of the community while others will be inclined to think of their physical safety within their new living environment. When clients ask this important question I always respond with a clarifying question to determine just what they really mean by secure. This ensures that I’ll answer their specific question and also provides an opportunity to address the three ways living at St. George Village is a secure choice!

1. Financial

Financially, St. George Village is secure mainly due to our success in maintaining the community at full occupancy. Additionally a continuing care retirement community in Georgia, otherwise known as a CCRC, is highly regulated by the State Insurance Commission which requires us to have 25% of our annual operating expenses in reserves therefore ensuring that these types of communities are financially stable.

2. Safe Living Environment

A safe living environment is a valid concern for our clients because as they age the risk of a fall or the need for medical attention increases. Our members live confidently knowing that should they need assistance we can respond quickly to their needs. In addition is the concern for a secure building which St. George Village provides by limiting access to entrances and exits to our members only, excluding the main entrance that is monitored by our concierge staff, surveillance equipment and security guards. Members sleep well knowing that our 24 hour staff is watching the building as well as the weather to keep them informed, safe and secure!

3. Peace of Mind

Security can also be peace of mind for the future. It’s comforting to know that should you, your spouse or your parents have the need for assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing St. George Village gives members priority access to these services at a discounted rate. Although security and piece of mind is priceless, in today’s economy we cannot deny that value is an important factor in making a decision. Fortunately St. George Village holds the same value today as it did upon opening in 2005. We are please to offer a way for older adults to plan for their future healthcare and residential needs while living a very independent lifestyle.

For more information about how to plan for your future contact Stacy Gass at 678-987-0402.

I’m never really asked this question by clients yet it’s always implied when they say something like…St. George Village is really very nice, but I’m not ready to move just yet. When you’re independent and able to live without assistance it’s really hard to know when to make the move to a retirement community. You must admit that the thought of a retirement community leads one to think about aging people and a life that revolves around doctor’s appointments, wheel of fortune, eating diner at 5:00 and heading to bed around 7:00.

This idea is simply not true because retirement communities like St. George Village are occupied by vibrant people full of life enjoying the benefits offered through our wellness and activity programs. Some of the activities this week included the Brain Boot Camp, Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage slide show and the Rich and Famous guided Tour of Buckhead with Jim Howe. In addition to these activities residents had many opportunities to enjoy a game of bridge, poker, canasta or mah jongg. Our fitness program included water aerobics, yoga, strength training, line dancing and more.

So, if you are wondering when is the best time to make the move? The time is now… when you are able to enjoy all the community has to offer! In fact, physical health and the ability to live independently is one of the requirements for membership at St. George Village. For more information about membership requirements contact Stacy Gass at 678-987-0402 and check out the full activity and wellness calendar along with the newsletter located on our website.

This marks the first trial of products and services in preparation for the opening of the “St. George Pizzeria” coming this summer to the Village. The pizzeria will offer a pizza and sandwich buffet along with large and small take out or eat in pizzas. Residents will be able to customize their large or small pizzas or order from a menu that offers four specialty pizzas including “Meat Lovers”, “Veggie Lovers”, “Italian Lovers” and “Caribbean Lovers”. The buffet will offer a variety of pizzas by the slice, soup, salad bar and a selection of meats, breads, relish tray and cheeses to create their own sandwich.

Our residents had many great things to say about the pizza, letting us know that the products and new service will be greatly appreciated and that the pizza was delicious! The addition of the pizzeria expands the culinary venues at St. George Village which feature the main dining room, bistro, Sunday brunch and the Wednesday night theme dining buffet. This is just a one example of the many conveniences and quality services offered at Atlanta’s best retirement community. For more information about the St. George lifestyle call Stacy Gass at 770-645- 2340.

These family fun events are scheduled throughout the spring and summer months for all Wellington Court residents.

Family members of residents were encouraged to join us as well because we all know how important cookouts were to us growing up. I personally remember very well the cookouts at the lake with my grandparents, parents, brothers and sisters and of course my crazy uncles. Our residents particularly enjoy these cookouts because it also reminds them of their own family gatherings. Mary Lib, a resident at Wellington Court shared with us some of her cookout memories with her family in the North Carolina mountains with her 3 children and 5 grandchildren.

It was good to see so many healthy appetites… but then who could resist a hamburger hot off the grill!

We cherish these moments with our residents and their families here at St George Village and can’t wait for you to join us at one of these festive events soon!
