  • Waffles On Tour

Whether you like hash browns scattered, smothered and covered or a waffle (or two) cooked to golden brown perfection, Waffle House is a popular known quantity for good food around the country. And to think it all started right here in Georgia!

We wanted to learn all about this icon of the American South, so we paid a visit to the Waffle House Museum on E. College Ave. in Decatur. The museum is housed in the very first Waffle House location, which opened in 1955. We enjoyed seeing the vintage menus, uniforms and other memorabilia, including the jukebox stocked with songs like “Last Night I Saw Elvis at the Waffle House.”

If you, too, would like to visit the Waffle House Museum, plan ahead! Tours are available by appointment only or on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call 770-326-7086 or log on to Waffle House Museum.

  • Dancing is Good for Body and Soul

Line dancing, which became popular in the 70s disco era (remember the Electric Slide?), is a whole lot of fun…especially when you dance with friends! This form of dance is choreographed with a repeated sequence of steps, in which a group of people —in line formation — execute the steps at the same time.

Pictured enjoying one of our twice-monthly classes are Betty Franks, Rose Brual, Nancy Allvine, line dance teacher Leslie Thompson, Doris Kim and Abbie Codelli. (Marian David and Marge Pizzolato join them in the group photo.)

P.S. Men are welcome to join the ladies in this fun form of exercise that will get your heart pumping!

  • Resident-Staff Collaboration Results in Expanded Menu Options

Indian Cuisine Chef Education at St. George Village

When Ken Reheja moved to St. George Village, he knew that the community did not offer his native Indian cuisine. He also knew, however, that as a life plan retirement community, St. George Village has a person centered approach that encourages residents to actively participate and contribute ideas that are part of the community’s continuing evolution. So Ken began offering suggestions to our culinary team, which went to work creating some recipes to incorporate his ideas.

Recently, Ken approached our Culinary Services Director Daniel Shaffer about the possibility of inviting two of his friends to come to St. George Village to teach a cooking class on Indian cuisine. The class was scheduled and our culinary staff learned how to prepare four authentic recipes, including a soup and an okra dish.

As a result, our culinary team is committed to a creative process that will lead to more vegetarian offerings on our menus. And we are pleased to offer a diversified cuisine that meets the needs of our residents.

What a wonderful collaboration between our residents and staff! Thanks, Ken!

  • Winter’s Beauty

“He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.” — John Burroughs

It’s a beautiful winter at St. George Village. Here’s a photo of our lovely gazebo and lake on a recent snowy December day here in Georgia. It’s like a picture perfect postcard, right?

  • Get in the Game — Have Fun in Retirement!

Who needs an actual football game to enjoy a tailgate party? It was all rah-rah-rah, sis-boom-bah at St. George Village when residents and visitors wearing their game-day best arrived at our October Tailgate & Celebrate event!

Tailgate & Celebrate was an afternoon to be remembered, with all of the ambience and fanfare of a college football game day experience. The event kicked off with a welcome by the Blessed Trinity High School Marching Band drum line at our front entrance, and classic cars lining the driveway, beckoning to be explored.

Throughout our grounds, guests joined in games of corn hole and football toss, grooved to the sounds of the 1950s and 60s spun by a DJ, and crammed into a photo booth for fun group snapshots. Our fabulous dining services staff prepared and served up a variety of delicious tailgate-style foods under college-themed tents, where fans of a feather gathered for more photo opportunities. And throughout the community, residents proudly displayed their college memorabilia, adding to the festive fall atmosphere.

At St. George Village, we understand the importance of having fun and why it is an integral part of a happy, healthy and successful retirement. According to the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the oldest and most respected studies on aging in the country, exercising, making new friends, continuing to learn and having fun are the closest things to finding the fountain of youth. In fact, planning for how you’re going to incorporate these elements into your retirement lifestyle is crucial to how successful you will be.

Fun events like Tailgate & Celebrate are a regular part of our full slate of activities that include planned excursions to places local and farther away, intellectually challenging discussions and technology workshops, fitness opportunities, gaming, concerts and more! Every day, we offer opportunities for our residents to learn new things, make new friends and live life to the fullest.

Come see all of the ways you can experience a fun-filled retirement lifestyle at St. George Village. Take a tour, stay for lunch. Call Stacy at 678-987-0402 for a confidential appointment.
